Our Story
A practice built around listening, not telling
Sinar Dagang was founded on a simple observation: small business owners in Malaysia often know what's not working — they just need a calm, experienced voice to help them think it through.

How we came to be
Sinar Dagang — meaning "trade light" or "light of commerce" in Malay — started as a small advisory practice in Kuala Lumpur in 2017. The founder, having spent years working alongside retail, food, and service businesses across the Klang Valley, noticed that many owners were capable and motivated, but lacked access to the kind of quiet, considered guidance that larger companies took for granted.
The practice was built around a different approach: no fixed prescriptions, no aggressive timelines. Instead, a willingness to sit with a business owner, understand their particular circumstances, and offer thoughtful options rather than confident instructions.
Over time, we've worked with owners across a wide range of trades — from neighbourhood cafés and boutique retailers to independent service providers and family-run workshops. The common thread has been patience: ours, and theirs.
Our Mission
To offer small business owners in Malaysia a dependable, unhurried space to examine their business and find a clearer path forward — without pressure, without jargon.
Our Values
Honesty about what we observe. Respect for the owner's own judgment. A preference for small, well-considered steps over sweeping changes that don't stick.
The People
Who you'll be working with
A small, experienced team. We don't send junior staff to client meetings — the people you speak to are the same ones who do the work.

Fifteen years working with small businesses across the Klang Valley. Rashid leads client engagements and takes a particular interest in daily operations and pricing structure.

How We Work
Our professional standards
These aren't badges we display for credibility — they're practices we follow because they make our work more useful.
Client Confidentiality
Everything discussed in our sessions stays within the working relationship. We do not share client information with any third party, for any purpose.
Written Documentation
All engagements include written summaries. Verbal advice fades; a clear written record of what was discussed helps you act on it when the time is right.
Senior-Level Contact
You work directly with experienced consultants throughout. We don't hand off client relationships to junior staff after the first meeting.
Adaptive Approach
We adjust our focus as circumstances change. A plan made in January may need revisiting in June — and we build that flexibility into every ongoing engagement.
Plain Language
We don't use business school terminology to sound authoritative. If we can't explain something simply, that's our problem, not yours.
Balanced Perspective
We offer more than one viewpoint where possible. Business decisions involve trade-offs, and we try to surface them rather than advocate for a single path.
Our Approach to Small Business Consulting
Small business consulting in Kuala Lumpur — what we actually do
Running a small business in Malaysia involves a particular set of pressures: managing cash flow in an environment where late payments are common, setting prices that feel fair to local customers while still keeping the business viable, and making decisions without the financial cushion that larger organisations can fall back on.
At Sinar Dagang, we work with owners who are already doing the work — managing staff, handling customers, watching the numbers — but who find it useful to have an outside perspective from time to time. Our consulting isn't about imposing a framework; it's about sitting beside someone and helping them see their own business a little more clearly.
Our Morning Review service is suited to owners who want a grounded starting point: a single session that looks at how the business begins each day, where small inefficiencies tend to gather, and what might be worth addressing first. It's a low-commitment way to see whether working with us makes sense.
The Pricing Reflection service is for owners who sense that their current pricing may not be serving them well — either because it's below what the market would accept, or because it's creating friction with customers. We look at the numbers, the competitive context, and the owner's own goals, and offer options rather than a single recommendation.
Steady Year Support is for owners moving through a period of change: a new location, a shift in product mix, a growing team, or a business that's beginning to feel more complicated than it used to. Regular meetings, written check-ins, and a consistent advisory relationship help make that kind of transition more manageable.
We're based at Plaza Mont Kiara in Kuala Lumpur and work with small businesses throughout the Klang Valley. Sessions can also be conducted remotely for owners based further away.
